Good employees should be ambitious and set goals. Good employees do not settle for the status quo in their lives or in their work. Everyone should have in mind what they desire their lives to look like and have a plan to get there.
While attending graduate school, a fellow student confided in me that they wished they could go to the ocean and surf every day. Well, except for the days that he was sailing that is.
I have known men that wish they could spend their time fishing, hunting, or on the golf course. Personally, I do not know anyone that this life is a possibility. However, if planned and executed correctly, almost any lifestyle can be attained (if you start early enough). It takes planning and consistent and dedicated execution of the plan.
IT BEGINS BY KNOWING WHAT YOU WANT YOUR LIFE TO LOOK LIKE (within the realm of possibility)
Stephen Covey's second habit of highly effective people is to Begin With the End in Mind. We should have a pretty good idea where we want to go so that we can make a plan to get there. Let's take a look at your life and what you want your life to look like by examining your current reality and what steps you need to take to get you to where you want to be.
First, list the details of what you want your life to look like and when you want it to be a reality. Look at the timeline below.
Where do you want to live?
What kind of home and car do you want?
What job or hobby do you want to spent your time doing?
How much debt are you willing to have?
How much savings or investments do you want?
How do you want your family to be taken care of?
And now...
1. How old are you now?
2. How old do you want to be when the above is done?
3. How many years from now do you have by subtracting the age in #1 from the age in #2.
(Example: If you are thirty-five years of age and want to have your ideal lifestyle by age sixty, you have 25 years to do it in).
Before goals are set, an examination of your current life is needed to determine how far you are from your destination. As the old joke goes, a man approaches another man for directions and was told, "I don't think you can get there from here!" An employee once told me that she felt that becoming a nurse was the ticket to having the life that she wanted for her and her children. However, she never took any steps toward accomplishing that goal. What life changes do you need to make to get to your ultimate goal in life?
Do you need to go back to school?
Do you need another or different job?
Do you need to focus on reducing your existing debt?
Do you need to sell possessions to pay off debt or invest?
Do you need to move to another city for better opportunities?
What sacrifices do you need to make now?
Write all of these things down so that the become concrete goals. Goals may change along the way and that is ok. The important thing is to be able to say exactly what you desire.
GOING FURTHER
1. Describe the life that you desire. Be specific.
2. When do you realistically want to have this lifestyle?
3. How many years do you have to accomplish it?
4. What major things do you need to do to accomplish it? (More income, less debt, college, credentials, new job, etc.)
5. What are the first steps--the things that you need to accomplish before you realize your dreams that you haven't begun yet? (how will you reduce debt, how will you increase your income, when will you start college, what credentials do you need and when will you start, etc.)
6. When will you start these first steps? Be specific.
7. What major sacrifices will I need to make?
8. Where can you find a mentor to help?
9. Are you willing to hire a coach to help?
