In February of 1993, one of my favorite movies was released. Groundhog Day the movie has since become a classic that is played every year around the actual Groundhog Day.
The movie is about a news weatherman, Phil Connors, who mysteriously begins to replay the same day over and over. In the end, he changes from a self-centered egotist to an altruistic gentleman--and wins the girl.
From the first time that I watched the movie, I loved it because of the idea of reliving events over until you actually get it right. I wish it was that way with personal or career development, but in reality there are no "do overs." We must live with the consequences of our actions both good and bad. But everyday you go to work, you get the chance to do your job better than the day before and correct any mistakes. In that sense, every workday is a Groundhog Day!
Good employees continually develop themselves personally and professionally. Hopefully, your job has a development program that you can participate in and become a better employee and leader. Many companies do not have a formal development plan, but that does not mean that you should not develop yourself.
Here are five ways that you can develop yourself personally and professionally.
1. Ask your boss or supervisor how you can become a more valuable employee. The boss sees company needs better that the basic employee, ask them how you can add value to your job.
2. Find a mentor. Finding a mentor is probably the best way for people to develop themselves. A mentor is a persona that is doing (or has done) the job (or similar job) that you are doing or want to do. Mentors can help you avoid potential mistakes. They can introduce you to influencers in your field. If the person is not willing to be a mentor, then try to get as close to them as possible so that you can observe them (without being annoying). You can also be mentored by people through other media. Tony Robbins has mentored scores of people through his events, books, and YouTube videos and have never met them personally.
3. Hire a coach. I was skeptical about hiring a coach, until I was trained as a coach as part of a consulting certification I took. Part of the coach training was to be coached. I found that a coach helped me to clarify problems and set goals for solutions. I have been coached by several certified coaches and believe that coaching is the most underused development tool available today.
If you would like try coaching I would love to talk with you. Schedule a phone call and let's discuss the possibilities.
4. Get more certifications. There are countless online certifications available in almost every industry.
5. Listen to podcasts. While you do not get a certification, there are podcasts in virtually every topic. I have subscribed to Coaching for Leaders, Dose of Leadership, the Salesman, Entrepreneur Hour, and the Harvard Business Review Ideacast. I listen to these five consistently and take good notes and even re-listen to good podcasts over again. I would subscribe to more, but there is just not enough time.
Remember, every new workday is an opportunity to get it right and learn to do it better!

I've often heard it said that you need at least 5 coaches speaking into your life -- one spiritual, one physical, one financial, one career and one personal.
