Values and Values Congruence

Everyone has values that guide their life and decisions. Values are the principles or the standards of behavior. Values are the judgments of what is important in life. Values are instilled very early in life and are at the very core of what a person stands for.

"You may not be able to influence everyone around you, but you will be able to influence many when you stay true to your values."

Values have been defined as a broad based tendency to prefer certain states of affair over another. Values are programmed very early in life and touch every part of a person's life. Values have direction: good or bad, right or wrong, acceptable or not acceptable. Values usually have an emotional intensity. Some hold to their values  so strongly that have difficulty with people or situations with differing or opposite views. People often judge others based on their own persona

You may or may not be aware of your own values. It is a good exercise for everyone to discover what their own core values are and write them down. For example, integrity is a value that shows up in many people's list of values. Integrity is having the quality of honesty and having moral principles. When a person identifies integrity as a core value, it helps them in making decisions and holding to them better.

Values are also important in the workplace. Every employee should share the values of the company for which they work. Value congruence is the extent to which a person can behave at work consistent with their own values. It is very difficult to have meaningfulness at work if we are expected to do things that are inconsistent with the highest values we espouse in ourselves and others. Employers should hire people with values that are consistent with company values; and people should seek to work for companies that have congruent values.
