BR: Emotional Intelligence 2.0

Emotional Intelligence was a previous topic, now followed up with a book review on the same topic, "Emotional Intelligence 2.0" by Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves. They refer to Emotional Intelligence as EQ and remains a very popular topic in organization and leadership training.

Every day there are highly intelligent and well-educated people struggling to navigate in the world, while less intelligent and educated people are excelling. It has been thought that Emotional Intelligence (EI or EQ) makes the difference. EQ is harder to measure than IQ, but its power has been made clear.

"Employeeship" is all about equipping people so that they can become the best employee possible and so valuable that their employers cannot afford to let them go. Knowledge, experience, intelligence, and education is important, but an increase in EQ is as important--maybe more.

Bradberry and Greaves offers interesting information about EQ. They have been conducting research and have found that only 36% of the people tested (just over one third) were able to accurately identify their emotions as they happened. This means that almost two thirds of them could not identify their emotions as they happened. This is drastically important as emotions plays such a large role in our decision making ability.

Our brains are wired in such a way to make us emotional creatures first. Reactions to events are always processed through our emotions, then our cognitive brain. Emotional Intelligence is the ability to recognize and understand emotions in yourself and others, and your ability to use this awareness to manage your behavior and relationships. EQ affects how we manage behavior, navigate social complexities, and make personal decisions that achieve positive results.

Goleman's model of EI consists of five determining factors:

  1. Self-awareness
  2. Self-regulation
  3. Motivation
  4. Empathy
  5. Social Skills
On the other hand, Bradberry and Greaves have identified two competencies: Personal Competence and Social Competence with two skills each as shown here:

1. Personal Competence

  • Self-Awareness
  • Self-Management

2. Social Competence
  • Social Awareness
  • Relationship Management
I highly recommend that you purchase the book. With the purchase, you will receive free access to the Emotional Intelligence 2.0 appraisal.
