Many people will spend up to 95,000 hours of their lives on the job. Work is not just how we make money, but it also is the source of many of our psychological needs such as the need for significance and fulfillment, and self-esteem. Because work is such an important part of our lives, we should do the best and be the best that we can.
The structure of work is changing, and that affects the way that jobs are organized. Most organizations recognize the need to have a flexible workforce.
Flexibility allows a business to keep its workforce as small as possible to save on payroll expenses. Leadership tries to have maximum output and efficiency with a minimal work force. Many companies resort to hiring temporary help or contracting outside labor for some projects. Companies are also in the process of automating as much of their work to machines as possible. This increases efficiency and reduces costs.
As a result of the changing work landscape, companies have three basic types of worker: core employee, temporary worker, and sub-contractors. In the past, companies relied mainly upon their core or full-time employees. Today, however, more and more companies are using part-time, temporary workers, or sub-contractors.
So what?
What does this mean for your as an employee or someone looking for work? Primarily, it means that you are responsible for your own career. In today's world, you simply cannot rely on an employer to provide a job. When one job ends, you must be prepared to find another job. It is important to develop as many skills as possible, so that you can adapt to new tasks and projects. Be prepared to work as a core employee or as a temporary worker. Adaptability and a willingness to work in any structure allows more control of your career.
The key is flexibility. As the economy continues to shift from a production economy to a service or knowledge economy, the employee needs a wide variety of skills and knowledge. An employee must continually develop their skill-set and find new ways to offer these skills. The more flexible you are, the better your changes of success will be.
Going Further
1. Describe what it would take to make your present work condition "the greatest job in the world."
2. What would it take for you to be able to land "the perfect job?"
3. What training would set you up to make the next best career step?
4. If you were to be offered a promotion tomorrow, would your be ready or it? If no, what would you need?
5. How much of your identity is wrapped up in your work?
