Intrapreneurship is acting like an entrepreneur within an organization.
Intrapreneurship is a fairly new concept. "Intra" means "on the inside," therefore an intrapreneur is an entrepreneur on the inside of a company. Intraprenuers are usually highly self-motivated, proactive and action-oriented people who are comfortable with taking the initiative, within the boundaries of an organization, in pursuit of an innovative product or service. The intrapreneur has the comfort of knowing that failure does not have a personal cost as it does for an entrepreneur, since the organization absorbs losses arising from failure.
Famous entrepreneur and businessman Sir Richard Branson defines an intrapreneur as an employee that is given the freedom and financial support to create new products, services, and systems, who does not have to follow the company's usual routines or protocols.
The employee characteristics of drive, initiative, and productivity are rewarded by employers and are primary characteristics of an entrepreneur. Intrapreneurs have characteristics in common with entrepreneurs:
- They are creative,
- They are internally motivated.
- They are not satisfied with status quo.
- They have high tolerance for risk (they are not risk averse).
- They are driven.
- They hustle.
- They have vision (they see the possible).
- They are flexible (adapt easily).
- They seek change.
- They are decisive.
"Intrapreneur" was coined because many employees were identified as being entrepreneur-like, but they worked within a company. Intrapreneur is a good description for these employees. Good employees should develop entrepreneurial skills within the boundaries of a company. It has even been suggested that an intrapreneur is an entrepreneur in training. However, many intrapreneurs will not go on to start a business.
An important characteristic distinguishes intrapreneur from entrepreneur. Intrapreneurs are driven to produce and be productive, not for personal success, but for the success of their company. Intrapreneurs understand the context of their company and the industry in which their company functions. Because of this understanding, they have the vision and drive to take the initiative to solve problems and forge a new path for success for their company. Intrapreneurs understand that they will be rewarded, but their measure of success is not personal gains, but the gains of their company.
Good employees develop entrepreneurial skills.

So, they finally found a label for me! An important characteristic distinguishes intrapreneur from entrepreneur. Intrapreneurs are driven to produce and be productive, not for personal success, but for the success of the company. I've always believed that when the company wins everyone wins.
